The City in Movement Institute (IVM) is leading the project Passages, transitional spaces for the 21st century, an investigation-action in partnership with cities on the European, American and Asian continents.
Within the project, my task was to identify the characteristics of successful pedestrian (re)connections and present innovative 21st century Latin-American examples. I investigated the elements of usage, planning and participation, which brought a better understanding of some inspiring practices. Great examples are the collaborative transformation of a local connection perceived as unsafe into a true public pace (Sao Paolo), the better use of patrimonial spaces in the historical center of Mexico DF, or the effects of a new link between a neighbourhood and a nearby RER station that was till then “inaccessible”.
